The A team have won their two most recent matches in Division 2. First a 3.5-0.5 away win against Clacton C and then a 3-1 win against, the previously unbeaten, Maldon B. Javier and Aleksander both had success in their first competitive games for the club.

In the club championship the top two in each group are currently: Eldar Lachinov, Martin Harris (group 1), Pete Smith, Dimitrios Kolomvas (group 2), Nathan Barnes, Mark Johnson (group 3) and Brian Remmer, Phil Daley (group 4).

All group games in the club championship need to be completed by Wednesday 2nd April. At that point the draws for the first knockout round and the plate competition will be made. Where group games have not been completed the tournament controller will make any decisions regarding the awarding of wins by default.

The C team kept their position at the top of Division 3 with a draw against Clacton C. The B team followed up their 4-0 win against Galleywood Knights with a 3.5-0.5 away win over Maldon C. The B team are in 2nd place in the division, but have played fewer games than the C team.

Colchester B v Galleywood Knights

The B team played their first match since October - maintaining their unbeaten status with a 4-0 win against Galleywood Knights (the only team to beat Colchester C so far this season). The B team move up to 2nd in Division 3, behind the C team (who have played more games).

Here is the game from board 3 - White obtains a very strong centre which he uses as the springboard for an attack on the king. White sacrifices a rook to rip open the defence and finish Black off.

Club handicap results

11 players took part in the club handicap competition. The first four rounds used random pairings with the top four players then going through to the knockout phase.

The rules for the handicap were:

1. Grading difference of 1-10: lower-graded player has white, higher-graded player starts without their b7 pawn
2. Grading difference of 11-20: lower-graded player has white, higher-graded player starts without their b7 and c7 pawns
3. Grading difference of 21-30: lower-graded player has white, higher-graded player starts without their b8 knight
4. Grading difference of 31+: lower-graded player has white, higher-graded player starts without their a8 rook
5. Each player has 10 minutes on the clock

After the first four rounds Eldar Lachinov was the only player to win all his matches, and there were four players with a score of 3 out of 4 (Clive Bellinger, Mark Johnson, Ian Gooding and Javier Ruano Marco).

In the semi-finals, Mark beat Ian and Eldar beat Javier. In the final Eldar finished off the match with a queen sacrifice to beat Mark - so a victory for Azerbaijan.

Earlier in the month there was a 7-board friendly match against the University of Essex - though with three of the University players being regulars for the Colchester team it did feel a bit like a Colchester vs Colchester match.
