Tony Locke Rapidplay - Round 6

The draw for the final round of the Tony Locke Rapidplay has now been made. There are still a number of games from earlier rounds outstanding but the leaders at this stage are Matt Stemp, Brian Remmer, and Clive Bellinger, though there are a lot of players only half a point behind. For the purposes of making the draw games not played so far have been assumed to be draws, except where a player has played very few games in the competition - games against these players have been assumed to be default wins (these players have also, provisionally, not been put in the draw for round 6).

Draw for round 6:

Colchester B round-up

Colchester B drew and won their last two matches to finish the season unbeaten and finish in 1st place in NECL Division 2, improving on their 2nd place last season. They were 5 points clear at the top of the table (from Clacton A, Chelmsford B and Baddow B), this was a larger margin than that achieved by the A team in this division last season.

The team's final match was a 3-1 win against Chelmsford B. Felix won the exchange after the opening (an open Sicilian), but an inaccurate move and his opponent's strong bishop resulted in a draw by repetition. Mike held onto the gambit pawn in the Milner-Barry variation of the French Defence, he won a further pawn and was comfortably winning from then on. Mark got a strong position after the opening and converted this into an extra pawn. However, this wasn't quite enough to force the win in a rook and minor piece endgame. Nathan comfortably equalised as Black but then blundered a pawn when trying to open the game up. As pieces came off it looked like an outside chance of a draw at best, until his opponent blundered twice as time started to run out - once to a completely level endgame (it would have been knight and 3 isolated pawns against a rook with no way of stopping the rook being exchanged for the three pawns) and then into a mate-in-one.

NECL Update

There are just 4 matches left for Colchester teams this season.

In Division 2, Colchester B are on 100% and have two matches left. They could win the division even if they lose both those matches. A draw or better in the match against Clacton B this Wednesday will guarantee first place.

In Division 1, Colchester A have one match left. They can't win the division but could finish as high as 2nd - depending on the result of their final match against Billericay and the match between Writtle A and Chelmsford A.

In Division 3, Colchester C have one match left. They won the division with two matches to spare, but a final win will mean they finish with a 100% record. Colchester D have played all their matches; they are waiting for other results to see where they finish - they could finish as high as 3rd and will be at least 5th.

Colchester C win NECL Division 3

They still have two matches to play, but following the result in yesterday's Brentwood C - Clacton B match, Colchester C are now guaranteed to finish in 1st place in Division 3.

In the same division, Colchester D have played all their matches for this season and will finish somewhere between 3rd and 7th (depending on the results of the remaining 7 matches to be played in this division).
